This goes for porches, decks and, of course, the patio. When choosing the best patio furniture for your home it is important to be prepared with key information to help make selection and purchase easier. This includes accurate measurements of the space where the furniture will be placed, style and design expectations, intended use and budget. Unlike with a covered deck or porch, patio furniture will likely be exposed to the elements. Durability and weather-ability is therefor of tantamount importance.

To make an informed decision when selecting patio furniture, consider these factors:

Available Space

If the space is relatively small you will want to stay away from large pieces that overcome the entire area. Oversized pieces are best suited to open spaces such as backyards or areas with ample room. Gazebos and decks are also great places to house entire patio furniture sets. Some manufacturers provide mix and match choices with an optional sectional sofa. Not only does this give you more seating space but it also moves away from the traditional four chairs and table concept that is typical for patio furniture.

Style and Design Expectations

Is the rest of the house’s décor traditional or modern? While outdoor patio furniture is removed from the interior it should still be in sync with the basic décor in the main home, says Ronique Gibson Associate A.I.A, LEED AP and Design Principal at Stagetecture, but in a way that works with the homeowner’s sense of style. “It's great to have decor that jives, but more importantly an eclectic mix of a client's travels around the world may speak more to their style, than ensuring the interiors are all one specific design style, ” says Gibson.

Primary Use

For homeowners who choose to entertain frequently, patio furniture should accommodate the types of crowds typically catered to in most of their gatherings. Outdoor furniture that will be used frequently and for long periods of time should be built well using durable materials and solid construction. Patio furniture such as the casual line of outdoor furnishings offered by Napoleon is made using fabrics treated for weather protection. Their frames are built with cast aluminum, while the wicker used on many of their pieces is designed to withstand most of the expected outdoor elements. Napoleon caters to the design-centric customer too with collections like the Lisbon Collection, which marries solid construction and materials with beauty and aesthetic form. With a manufacturer’s suggest retail price of $2,099 the Lisbon collection falls in the mid-range of patio furniture sets.

Budget

Ideal for poolsides, gardens, three-season rooms and decks, oversized patio furniture allows comfortable lounging in a relaxed atmosphere.

There are department store varieties of patio furniture that can cost as little as the $388.99, such as this Oakland Living 3-piece Tea Rose bistro set. Conversely, prices can climb as high as the Topaz collection the high-end signature pieces by Skyline Design, which retail from $5,999 to $6,999 depending on materials used. “You see the entire set that includes a sofa, club chair, ottoman, side table and coffee table – in a lot of resorts. The Topaz collection is available with either smoke black glass table tops or black granite table tops – both are very popular high-end outdoor furniture sets, ” says Internet Business Manager Matt Baglietto of authorized dealer Landscaper Outlet. Built with synthetic wicker the quality is unmatched when you get to this level of patio furniture, Baglietto explains.

Other Considerations

Once a few furniture sets have been shortlisted it is a good idea to investigate the level of maintenance needed to care for each piece. If there are cushions, look for a fabric guard treatment that will prolong the life of your furniture. Any stained or treated wicker, wood or other materials will likely need regular maintenance to upkeep their finish. It is important to find out whether the set can weather environmental elements in your climate. Glass-top tables may not be suitable for colder climates unless the manufacturer specifically states they can withstand very low temperatures.

If possible, choose your set only after you have tried out each prospective piece for comfort. If you are unsure of size and whether the furniture will fit in your designated space, take measurements of the space and compare them with the furniture to be sure.

Patio furniture can, and should be, an extension to your home and personal style. Enjoy the process of searching for the perfect set for you and your family!
Blog:5a261008-389a-47c7-8282-e548177a3e6aPost:2c9c45fe-6811-455b-be07-02ab1a7fbad6 Grilling Accessory Buying Guide http://www.homeclick.com/community/buying-guides-garden-patio-buying-guides.aspx/_grilling-accessory-buying-guide Wed, 31 Aug 2011 15:33:00 GMT
Grilling Accessory Buying Guide

Grilling has become increasingly popular over the last decade. Perhaps it's because grilling offers endless opportunities to create satisfying and delicious meals, or maybe it appeals to our more basic instincts of cooking with fire. No one knows for sure, but for whatever reasons, more and more Americans are enjoying outdoor grilling. In fact, according to the 2005 HBSA State of the Barbeque Industry Report, 81 percent of U.S. households owned a grill. That means 8 out of 10 households owned an outdoor barbeque grill or smoker and they were using them. Consumers grilled an average of 26 times a year, and grilling is no longer being restricted to summer time. More and more people are out there grilling year-round.

These days, there's a vast selection of grills to choose from including gas, electric and charcoal. After the decision has been made on which grill is best for you, you'll need to consider grilling accessories. You might be wondering if all those accessories are really necessary? The answer would be yes, if for no other reason than appreciating that having the proper tools for grilling will not only make the job safer and easier, but more enjoyable as well.

Things to Consider

Begin your search for grilling accessories and you can easily become overwhelmed by the selection of accessories and gadgets created solely for the purpose of outdoor cooking. Woks, baskets, tongs, forks, vegetable holders, thermometers, skewers: the list goes on and on. Many of these products are designed to make the grilling experience easier for you, and each individual may find that one item could be handier than another depending on their own grilling preference. For example, if you enjoy grilling lots of vegetables, a vegetable holder and/or basket would be an essential. Others might be happy enough to just wrap their vegetables in a little aluminum foil and just throw them on the grill. It simply comes down to preference.

There are some grilling accessories that can be considered essential. These usually include a set of grilling tongs, a grilling spatula, basting brushes, a grilling fork, a meat thermometer, and a set of grill mitts. For the purpose of this product guide, we will concentrate on these essential accessories.

Safety

The difference between enjoying the grilling experience and spending some time in the emergency room being treated for burns fundamentally comes down to using products that are safe. Long handled utensils such as tongs, basting brushes, spatulas and forks are not only necessary for getting the foods on and off the hot grill, but are also great for basting and turning. Likewise, a set of heavy duty mitts will safeguard your hands and forearms from potential grease burns. Using the proper grilling tools lets you focus on your food without worrying about injuring your hands and arms.

Durability

When purchasing grilling accessories, you should look for products that are built to last and will withstand the intense heat. Anything plastic will not serve you well when being used over an open flame. Stainless steel and iron products are built to not only withstand the heat, but typically are built to last the long haul.

Comfort and Convenience

Grilling accessories should be sturdy, but comfortable and easy to handle. If you grill often, you want tools that are comfortable and easy to use. Those Rosewood-handled tongs or spatula may look first-class, but if they aren't comfortable in your hand, you're not likely to continue using them. You may also want to consider the convenience of accessories that have loops or hooks on the handles which will make them easy to hang within reach of your grill.

A Look at Essentials

Here is a brief overview of the grilling accessory essentials to get you started.

Long-handled Tongs

Long-handled tongs are a must-have. When grilling, they essentially become your hands when dealing with food on the grill. Therefore, it is important that they be both sturdy and comfortable.

Many grill gurus recommend having two sets of tongs. One set that you use with your food and the other for pushing the hot coals, grates and racks around. A good stainless steel set works well for food and ensures that you will generally enjoy longer use out of them. Good tongs have a locking mechanism that won't spring open and a hand-grip that is still easy to hold when wet or greasy.

Long-handled Spatulas

The best long-handled spatulas are those that have large blades and a bent handle. These will slip under your food easily for flipping. Spatulas are particularly useful when grilling fish, which tends to fall apart easily when picked up with tongs or a fork. Since you do not want to pierce your meat while it is cooking, a large spatula can also assist you in handling larger cuts of meat.

Spatulas that have holes or slots in the blade will allow steam to be released and prevent sogginess. It also ensures that your meat, poultry and fish will not easily slide off when cooking. Some spatulas also have a built-in saw-tooth on one of the blade's sides. A long-handled grilling fork is however is also useful for checking the doneness of your vegetables. Like its partner, the tongs, shop for a stainless steel fork that is both functional and sturdy. There are several varieties that offer wooden handles for easy grip and comfort.

Brushes

When it comes to grilling brushes, you may find that you will need more than one to get the job done. Brushes come in a variety of materials ranging from natural fibers to heat resistant synthetics. Generally, brushes do not tend to last for very long, so do not spend excessively on this particular item. However, it is in your best interest to choose brushes that are dishwasher safe.

Most grillers purchase one brush for oiling the surface of the grill and another for basting. By oiling the grate prior to grilling, you keep the grate free of food debris and your food from sticking to the grill. Your basting brush will be used for basting and for keeping your food moist. Internal meat thermometers take the guesswork out of grilling, as they measure the internal temperature of your cooked meat and poultry to ensure that they have reached a safe temperature, harmful bacteria have been destroyed, and that your food is perfectly cooked. The type of thermometer you select: digital, instant read or pop-up, will, to a large part, determine when you should insert it into the meat. Make sure that the thermometer you select is designed specifically for meat and poultry and will work on your grill.

Grilling Mitts

Grilling mitts should be heat proof, comfortable, and easy to clean. Fireproof grilling mitts not only let you handle flaming hot metal cooking equipment, but they also won't catch on fire when touched by flames. Extra long mitts will also protect your arms from splashing liquids, grease and sparks. Mitts featuring grip surfaces are nice because they make it easy to flip a rack of ribs or move a large cut of meat.

Price Range

You can purchase grilling accessories either in convenient sets or individually. Prices will vary depending on the materials used. Higher-end quality pieces tend to be more durable and will cost more, but in the long run, they will provide you with a better return on your investment. Individual pieces can start as low as under $10 and run upwards of $40. Sets containing the basic grilling accessories start around $20 and can reach as high as $150. However, you should be able to find a quality starter kit for around $40-$50.
Blog:5a261008-389a-47c7-8282-e548177a3e6aPost:de63c49a-63f1-4e26-9c39-372da053e3cb Picking Out the Perfect Grill http://www.homeclick.com/community/buying-guides-garden-patio-buying-guides.aspx/_picking-out-perfect-grill Mon, 29 Aug 2011 18:24:00 GMT
Picking Out the Perfect Grill

Take into account what types of food you plan on cooking with your new grill.

There are various considerations to keep in mind when picking out a grill for your home. There is no one-size-fits-all grill, but there is a perfect grill out there for you. With so many different types of grills available in every price range and numerous features to consider, you may find your head spinning when you go shopping for one.

In considering what type of grill would best meet your needs and desires, you’ll want to investigate various aspects, including method of cooking, heat and grilling area specifications, as well as features and options. Once you analyze each of these aspects, the image of the outdoor grill that’s just right for you will become clear.

Method of Cooking

One way to differentiate outdoor grills is by the cooking methods they employ. Grilling is in essence fast cooking. But there’s fast, faster and super fast. There are three primary types of grills on the market—charcoal, gas and infrared. A fourth type, a hybrid, combines gas and infrared into one unit.

Charcoal

For years, charcoal was the way to go. A charcoal grill is designed to use briquettes that are lit and then burn at a slow rate. Golden and red embers define the heat source and the smell of charcoal is distinctive. Many people contend that this is the only way to prepare food on an outdoor grill as the charcoal imbrues the food with mouthwatering flavors.

Charcoal grills are fairly easy to transport as they tend to be lightweight and the fuel, which is solid, is carried separate from the grill. They are also relatively inexpensive, ranging in price from under $100 to around $250.

There are drawbacks with this type of grill in that the heat source is hard to control, as you usually raise or lower the grate in proximity to the heat source, and it’s hard to moderate the temperature evenly along the cooking surface. Finally, charcoal ashes can make a mess and are difficult to clean up.

Gas

Gas grills use propane to fuel their fire. Special heat conducting tiles placed in the bottom of the grill help intensify and even out the temperature. If using a gas grill, it’s a good idea to always have a second tank of propane on hand; that way, you can’t run out while you’re cooking.

Gas grills vary in price, ranging from a few hundred dollars to thousands. How much you spend depends on exactly how often you’ll use the grill, the variety of dishes you’ll cook and the amount of food you’re preparing. One drawback in cooking with gas for some is that the food lacks that genuine charcoal flavor. However, many people add a wood box to their gas grill and flavor the food with distinctive woods, such as mesquite. Overall, these are easier to clean than those that use charcoal.

Infrared

I nfrared grills use superhot heat to cook food. These grills sear flavor in by cooking foods with intense, concentrated heat. In a matter of minutes, your meal can be cooked to perfection. If you’re looking for that steakhouse flavor this is how you get it. Plus, infrared grills usually allow for wide range of cooking temperatures, from low, which is associated with barbecuing, to super hot for searing.

Although infrared grills have become popular, they can be pricy. Some gas grills will include an infrared burner, but this feature can raise the price considerably. Also, cooking times are much shorter and that means an infrared device has to be closely monitored. Finally, as it is with gas grills, some people simply prefer the flavors associated with the standard charcoal grill.

BTUs and Grilling Surface

A gas grill with a stainless steel finish is distinctive and resists the elements.

Heat is measured by British Thermal Units (BTUs). Thus, when you’re considering various gas or infrared grills, you’ll find the total BTUs listed. How, BTU listings can be a bit deceptive.

Even though one grill may offer more BTUs than another, the heat may be less effective. That’s because the actual amount of heat generated has to be averaged over the size of the grilling surface. What you want for efficient cooking is an average of 95 to 100 BTUs per square-inch.

Here’s an example. Excuse the math, but it’s necessary to illustrate the point. I f you have one grill with 85,000 BTUs and another with 100,000, you might assume the second is the best choice because of the higher BTUs. However, if the grill surface of the first is 24” x 36” ( 864 square inches), it would offer 98.4 BTUs/sq-in (85,000/864 = 98.4). If the second grill with 100,000 BTUs has a grill area measuring 32” x 36” (1,152 square inches), it would provide 86.8 BTUs/sq-in (100,000/1,152 = 86.8).

The second grill’s BTUs per square-inch are well below the recommended average of 95-100. In other words, t he first grill is one you can cook on and the second might make a good buffet table. Before purchasing a gas or infrared grill, make sure it will provide you with the heat and BTUs per square inch you require to cook your food effectively and safely.

Grill Features and Options

There are various grill features and options that you’ll want to consider. These are primarily associated with gas and infrared grills since charcoal devices are usually fairly simple.

Grates—steel, stainless steel, porcelain coated or cast iron

Steel is least effective and can deteriorate quickly

Stainless steel wears longer than steel

Porcelain coated steel is easy to clean and wears longer

Cast iron, which is heavy and must be seasoned or oiled, has superior conductivity and durability but is difficult to clean.

Porcelain coated cast iron has superior conductivity, durability and is easy to clean

Number of burners—one, two, three or more

One can be limiting but can be fine for cooking a burger or steak

Two gives you flexibility to cook at different temperatures

Three can offer you more choices for complex meals

Stainless steel finish looks great and resists corrosion

Built-in thermometer to monitor temperature under the hood

Digital readouts for temperature are available but pricy

Warming burner to keep cooked foods hot

Multilevel racks for cooked foods offer efficient storage

Grill cover with a window enables you to observe cooking without losing heat

Side panels for plates, food and utensils are handy

Storage cabinets underneath can save time and space

Infrared burners offer that charbroil effect

Final Considerations

When selecting the perfect grill for your outdoor cooking needs, your first big decision will be gas, charcoal or infrared. Once that’s out of the way, it’s on to grill size. Remember the BTU per square inch guideline. Don’t buy too small or you’ll be one sad tong-wielding chef. Be wary of large gas models that are cheap as they may not have enough BTUs per square-inch.

Finally, you’ll need to consider what features you will utilize. If grilling is a year-round venture that includes family meals and parties, pay attention to those little add-ons like a built-in thermometer or side burner, which can make whipping up that multi-course grilled masterpiece that much easier. Of course, all of these choices are guided by how much you’re able and willing to spend on your outdoor grill . Enjoy cooking and eating fresh food outdoors! There’s nothing like it.
Blog:5a261008-389a-47c7-8282-e548177a3e6aPost:457d754a-35ff-47c3-98c3-6e15477e3ea6 Bird Houses Buying Guide http://www.homeclick.com/community/buying-guides-garden-patio-buying-guides.aspx/_bird-houses-buying-guide Mon, 29 Aug 2011 15:34:00 GMT
Bird Houses Buying Guides
A bird house not only brings a charming piece of nature closer to you; it gives birds a safe place to nest. If you choose your bird house carefully, you'll get to enjoy the experience of watching birds prepare their nest and care for their eggs and chicks, and then you'll see the grand finale: the chicks' first flights! It's an engaging and awe-inspiring experience for both adults and children alike.
The Quick Scoop

Buying a bird house is generally a great idea. If tackled properly, it's good for the birds and fun for you as well. However, you need to do your research, because for an inexperienced buyer, there are a surprisingly large number of issues to consider. A bird house requires ventilation and drainage. It needs to be made of a material that is appropriate for birds and that won't absorb too much heat. It should also effectively keep predators out. An easy way to open it is a must, so that you can check on conditions, take a peek at your residents, and clean it out as needed.

The general rule is to buy a simple wood birdhouse designed for the comfort and safety of its guests. There are beautiful bird houses, often ornate, colorful and extremely appealing to humans, but these may actually be more suited for use as decorative knick-knacks. Of course, there are exceptions that combine both high levels of detail, beauty and craftsmanship with practicality and function, but it is best to be prepared with the facts so you can evaluate your choices carefully. Remember, the birds are beautiful, so perhaps the birdhouse doesn't have to be. And if a decorative but unpractical birdhouse truly catches your eye, you can use it as a lovely accent piece in a country-style kitchen or a rustic family room instead.

The Birds

Bird houses are designed to provide a sheltered spot for tree cavity-nesting birds that are building a nest. If a suitable natural nesting spot is not readily available, most cavity-nesting birds will readily settle in an appropriately placed and sized bird house. Other birds nest in tree branches, bushes, and reeds, and these will not nest in a bird house.

Here is a general list of tree-cavity nesting birds who may settle in a bird house: bluebirds, robins, chickadees, wrens, finches, flycatchers, warblers, nuthatches, titmice, brown creepers, tree and barn swallows, flicker and red-bellied woodpeckers, kestrels, and purple martins.

Each species will have some specific preferences regarding size of house, mounting height, size of entry opening and location. In this guide we will focus on the general safety and comfort issues common to most birds. Location and mounting height will probably be determined by what works within your outdoor space. You will want to have fairly easy access to the bird house for viewing and maintenance. Unless you are already an expert birder, part of the fun will be trying to identify the type of birds you're housing.

Structures

A bird house that is good for birds (as opposed to indoor decorative purposes) should meet the criteria outlined below. In general, a bird house should be fairly simple. Birds generally nest as one family unit. Because of this, they do not require a large space, and only need one entry opening. One exception worth noting are purple martins, who nest in groups. Because of this, houses for purple martins will need at least four rooms and openings.

As far as longevity goes, you can expect that a well-made wood bird house can last up to 10 years, and may fledge as many as 50 birds during that time.

Material

Wood is usually the best material for bird houses. It is durable, breathes, and provides good insulation. Thicker wood will help keep the temperature from getting too hot or cold inside. Since the material needs to be non-toxic to birds, it should not be painted, treated or stained inside. Besides wood, other suitable material options include pottery, gourds, and aluminum.

Ventilation/Drainage

Proper ventilation and drainage are key components in a good bird house. Ventilation allows air to circulate and prevents the interior from becoming too hot. Drainage is vital, since it keeps the baby birds from drowning during rain storms.

Maintenance Access

There should be an easy way for you to reach the inside for cleaning, maintenance, and taking a peek. Often the top or a side will be hinged for access.

Bird Entrance Hole

The entrance should be just big enough for the birds to get in. The smaller the hole, the better it will be at keeping predators out. Most species do well with an opening of one to two inches. There should be no perch in front of the hole. Birds don't need a perch and it only makes it easier for predators to reach in or wait for the nesting birds to fly out. Finally, an entrance hole should be at least five inches above the floor of the house, to help keep the nest safe from any predators who can manage to reach in.

Roof

The roof should extend a few inches over the entrance hole and have a good pitch to help keep rain out.

General Dimensions

For most species, a floor size of about four by four to eight by eight, with a house depth of about six to 15 inches, will work well. The major exceptions are purple martin houses, which, as mentioned, require several rooms.

Placement

When you are buying a bird house, make sure that it is easily mountable, since this is a necessity. For many species, a height off the ground of four to 10 feet is perfect, though some species, such as purple martins and some woodpeckers, prefer houses from 10 to 20 feet up. The best plan is to choose a height that works for you, since you will be the one maintaining it and enjoying the view.

Mounting options include hanging the house from a tree limb, or mounting it to a fence, pole, or tree trunk. Houses on metal poles are safest from predators.

Predators

Raccoons, opossums, squirrels, cats, dogs, and snakes are all natural predators to cavity nesting birds. House sparrows and starlings, two species introduced from Europe, will also try to kill cavity-nesting birds. The best defenses are: mounting the house on a metal pole, since they are hard to climb; keeping the entrance opening as small as possible and at least five inches above the floor of the house; having an extra thick wood block, called a predator guard, at the opening to make it harder for animals to reach in; and not using perches, since they provide a place for predators to wait.

Care and Maintenance

Your key maintenance job will be cleaning the house out after use by a bird brood. If you clean out the house soon after the brood has flown away, you may end up providing a home for more than just one family that season. After the season, you can either store your house inside or leave it out. Clean it out again in the spring and you'll be ready for a new season.

Price Range

A good bird house does not have to cost very much. For $20 to $30, you can get a well-designed, simple, and attractive wood bird house. Spending within $50 to $100 will get you one with a little more detail in the design. More decorative or ornate choices can cost as high as $300, with some choices even higher.
Blog:5a261008-389a-47c7-8282-e548177a3e6aPost:53a03a9b-66e2-4f5a-8adf-99e5fafa55d5 Bird Feeder Buying Guide http://www.homeclick.com/community/buying-guides-garden-patio-buying-guides.aspx/_bird-feeder-buying-guide Thu, 25 Aug 2011 15:17:00 GMT
Bird Feeder Buying Guide

Bird feeders are a wonderful way to attract birds into your yard. Bringing birds together like this allows homeowners to bird watch from the comfort of their home. Many people will keep a guidebook for identifying birds close to the nearest window. Depending on where you position the bird feeder or feeders, it can also be good to keep a pair of binoculars available. In addition to the observation opportunities, animal lovers often fill bird feeders in the wintertime when the birds might otherwise have trouble finding enough food. High fat bird foods like suet are ideal for during the winter months.

Bird feeders come in a wide variety of designs, some of which are targeted to specific birds. Certain seed types or mixes are often used to try to attract individual species, but buyers should be aware that this approach may have mixed results. Even the ideal type of food won't necessarily attract orioles, for instance, if there aren't any in your area, or if those that are there have found another preferred feeding location.

Types of Bird Feeder

Most bird feeders fall into three general categories. There are tube bird feeders, where the birds pluck seeds from holes in the sides of the feeder containing the seed. There are platform feeders, where birds land and pick up seed that is scattered on the surface. There are also suet feeders, where feeding cakes are hung within mesh bags or cages that leave space for birds to peck through the holes. Suet is made from high quality processed beef fat that is mixed with foods such as seeds and nuts and then cooled into cakes or balls. It can be perfect for feeding birds during harsh winters.

In addition to these three types, there are targeted feeders such as hummingbird feeders, oriole feeders and bluebird feeders. While hummingbird feeders are only really usable by hummingbirds, be aware that bluebird or oriole feeders may also be used by other species. There are no guarantees that you will attract specific birds, only ways of increasing the possibility.

While practicality is a main concern in choosing which bird feeder to buy, style may also be a big consideration. Some high-end bird feeders are made with architectural styling or other stylish designs that make them attractive additions to your home garden in their own right.

Tube Bird Feeders

Tube bird feeders are usually used with sunflower seeds or wild bird seed mixes. The feeder is filled with seed, which is then either hung or elevated on a pole. There are generally perches next each of the several holes in the side of the tube, where all types of wild birds can land and perch and pluck a few seeds away for their meal. Longer tube feeders have more holes and perches to accommodate more birds at once, but as the level of seed goes down, the higher openings no longer give access to the seed. While this can allow homeowners to continue providing seed while they are away, for bird watching it's important to make sure the bird feeders stay relatively full. Tube feeders attract a wide variety of wild birds, including those that scrounge on the ground for seeds that have dropped.

Some designs combine multiple tubes into the same bird feeder, or surround the feeder with a loose wire cage that allows smaller birds to get through to where they are protected from predators. There are also specialized versions of tube bird feeders that are designed to hold thistle seed to attract finches.

Platform Bird Feeders

Many birds, such as cardinals, are more comfortable eating from flat surfaces where they have an all-around view rather than from a perch on the side of a feeder. Platform bird feeders have a flat or bowled surface where seed can be spread for easy access by the birds. These feeders may need to be filled more often, but in combination with other types of feeders, they can help attract a wider range of birds for you to watch. They can be filled with almost any type of birdseed mix, including the same seed that is used in tube feeders.

Suet Bird Feeders

Suet bird feeders great to use in the winter months, when cold weather and a scarcity of natural food sources put wild birds more in need of a high energy food source. Cold weather also helps to keep the suet intact, which can be difficult in the warmer months. Suet balls and cakes are available from most companies that carry birdseed, and there are also guides online that show you how to make your own. The main feature of suet feeders is to provide enough support to hold the suet with enough holes to be accessible to the birds. This is done using a mesh structure, which may be utilitarian or decorative.

Decorative Bird Feeders

There are many bird feeders available that are highly decorative. Generally, these bird feeders are designed more for looks than for functionality, but they can still attract a wide variety of birds if they are kept filled with seed. Homeowners who want to maintain high-end decor for their yards have a variety of options to choose from, including architecturally styled bird gazebos, or sculptural accents that incorporate a bowl or shelf that holds the seed. Prices can range from the affordable to extravagant, with some feeders costing hundreds of dollars.

Targeted Bird Feeders

Bluebird Feeders

Bluebirds eat insects, so many homeowners who want to attract them use specialty bluebird feeders. These platform style feeders are stocked with mealworms, suet, or special high protein bluebird food. While bluebird feeders are designed to appeal to bluebirds according to their observed preferences and habits, they may attract other birds as well as, or instead of, bluebirds.

Hummingbird Feeders

With their jewel-like colors, tiny size, and amazing hovering abilities, hummingbirds are often considered some of the most exciting birds to spot. Since they feed on the nectar of flowers rather than seeds or insects, they will not be attracted by conventional bird feeders. There are hummingbird feeders designed specifically to appeal to and attract this species. Hummingbird feeders hold nectar or sugar-water for the hummingbirds to feed on, often with an imitation flower flute over the opening of the container to signal the presence of food to the hummingbirds. Hummingbird feeders may use several vessels which are separately filled, or may have several openings fed by one reservoir. Because hummingbirds feed from bright flowers, hummingbird feeders are usually very bright and decorative designs.

Oriole Feeders

Orioles commonly eat fruit such as oranges, so oriole feeders are designed to provide either fruit or fruit imitations using sugar water or jelly. The most common design is similar to the hummingbird feeder, using a reservoir of sugar water that fills the cups the orioles feed from. These feeders are usually colored orange to signal to the birds where the food is, and sometimes have attachments to include fresh slices of fruit for them to feed on as well.

Squirrels

While bird feeders attract birds to the yard for easy viewing, squirrels also view seeds as a delicious and nutritious food source. It shouldn't be surprising that what we view as birdseed, they would believe to be squirrel seed. After all, they get hungry too! Nonetheless, many bird feeder owners would prefer to keep their seed for the birds, and some go to great lengths to do so.

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders

Many companies sell "squirrel proof" bird feeders designed to let the birds eat while keeping the squirrels out. There are a variety of methods for this. Some bird feeders use a weight-sensitive collapsible perch that supports the weight of birds, but collapses once a heavier squirrel tries to make a landing. These systems are often adjustable so that they can also be used to keep out larger birds if the smaller ones are getting bullied away.

Another method is to use wire mesh to block access to squirrels. A large cage may surround the entire feeder, with holes large enough for the birds to go in and out easily and get to seed. Some platform feeders use a smaller wire mesh over the surface of the seed that birds can easily peck through to get seeds, but that squirrels can't reach through. Other bird feeders use domes to keep squirrels from jumping and landing on the feeder, or wide baffles to keep them from climbing up a support pole. A few bird feeder designs even use spinning hangers or electric shocks to deter those furry visitors.

To make these methods usable, bird feeders should be hung or mounted at least five or six feet up and at least eight feet from trees or branches that a squirrel might launch itself from. Otherwise, squirrels will often simply jump over protections like baffles. Even for mesh or weight sensitive feeders, there is always the potential that a squirrel might knock the feeder around enough to knock seed out onto the ground for easy access. Making an effort to keep the feeder out of reach can help to minimize such attempts.

Squirrel Feeders

While they can be pesky when they get in the way of bird watching, squirrels themselves can be fascinating creatures to watch. The same agility that makes them hard to keep out of a bird feeder can also be appreciated and beautiful to watch. That's why some companies also have feeders specifically for squirrels. While offering their own feeder may or may not keep the squirrels from trying for extra food from your birdfeeders, it can at least provide you the opportunity to watch their antics with appreciation rather than annoyance.

Prices

Prices for bird feeders vary widely, depending on the manufacturer, materials, complexity, and workmanship involved in their production. In general, larger or more complex bird feeders will be more expensive.

Tube Bird Feeders

Tube bird feeders may be a simple single tube with a handful of perches, or a large multi-tube system with a surrounding cage to keep the squirrels out. Because of this, prices range widely between $10 and $100.

Platform Bird Feeders

Platform Bird Feeders need a stable structure from which to feed and support birds, they are generally made of wood or metal rather than the light plastic of many tube bird feeders. As with tube feeders, however, they can be simple or more complex. Their prices range from about $30 to $100.

Suet Bird Feeders

Suet bird feeders may be as simple as a net ball filled with suet, but there are also larger more decorative versions available, as well as more permanent fixtures. Prices fall between $10 and $70.

Decorative Bird Feeders

Decorative bird feeders may involve a simple color scheme on a basic bird feeder, or an elaborate architectural-style design. Because of the wide variety of ways to make a bird feeder decorative, and the unlimited lengths that can be taken, their prices fall into a larger range. A pretty bird feeder can be found for as little as $10, but prices can easily range up to over $500.

Bluebird Feeders

Feeders targeted towards bluebirds are generally fairly simple, using a covered platform design, so prices don't vary a great deal. In general, they will cost between $30 and $40.

Hummingbird Feeders

Hummingbird feeders can be very simple or rather complex. They don't need to be very large to be effective, though, and almost all are made in attractively bright colors. Prices range between about $5 and $60.

Oriole Feeders

Like hummingbird feeders, oriole feeders are brightly colored and have a simple and basic design that may be added onto to some extent. Prices range between about $5 and $40.

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders

Adding a squirrel proofing mechanism will slightly add to the cost of a bird feeder, but they are still quite affordable. These bird feeders tend to be more utilitarian than decorative. Their prices for most models range between $20 and $90.

Squirrel Feeders

Feeders for squirrels are usually made with the fairly simple design of anchoring an ear of dried corn to a base. The base may be a simple platform, or may take on a variety of whimsical shapes like chairs, or even an alligator holding the corn in its wide spread jaws. Prices usually range from $20 to $40.
Blog:5a261008-389a-47c7-8282-e548177a3e6aPost:509d2b98-d695-4136-96c0-521a44d4e6ba Smart Barbecuing: Essential Grilling Accessories http://www.homeclick.com/community/buying-guides-garden-patio-buying-guides.aspx/_smart-barbecuing-essential-grilling-accessories Tue, 23 Aug 2011 15:12:00 GMT
Smart Barbecuing: Essential Grilling Accessories

The proper ware can make or break the kitchen cooking experience. Many people do, and if you haven't tried smoked foods, maybe now is the time. Serious connoisseurs of smoking like to tell others that you truly haven't barbequed until you've tended a fire all day to get that perfect pulled pork or smoked brisket. After all, smoking is the true process of Barbecue. Sure, grilling is a lot of fun, but if you are serious about barbecuing, you should look into buying a smoker.

Types of Smokers

There are two basic categories of smokers the vertical water smoker and the barbeque pit/dry smoker. Within each, there are several different models and styles to choose from.

Vertical water smokers somewhat resemble a trashcan in terms of its look. They are also often referred to as bullet smokers. In a vertical water smoker, a water pan typically sits between the heat source and the food and helps regulate the temperature. This ensures that the heat is kept near 212F degrees, or the boiling point of water. There are four types of vertical water smokers: gas, electric, charcoal and wood burning.

Gas Smokers and Electric Smokers

These are both convenient and easy to use. Many gas smokers are portable and can be easily traveled with, as long as you keep the gas tank full. Electric smokers obviously just plug right in.

Charcoal Smokers

These do require a bit of work and attention, but are affordable and provide great flavor. Small charcoal fire smokers are highly portable and very easy to use. As with a wood fire, you can expect to spend some time tending the fire. If you'd rather not do that for a long period of time (some smoking processes depending on the meat can take up to 8 hours), you should consider a gas or electric smoker.

Wood Burning Smokers

These are often referred to as the traditional or the original smokers. These types of smokers take some practice to use and to perfect the smoking process. Learning the right woods to burn (the fire has to be clean), how hot your fire needs to be, and how your smoker reacts will require a bit of practice and patience. Those who use this type of traditional smoker swear by the taste of the meat. For many, you can't beat the natural smoky flavors that can be achieved with the right wood.

With an electric, you get the added bonus of not depending upon any type of fuel source. You just set the temperature and go. Unfortunately, they can't take them with you unless you are going to be near a power source. Serious barbecuers reportedly are not quite as impressed with electric smokers, often making a comparison between a microwave and fine cooking. They view an electric smoker as a microwave in the sense that it is definitely convenient to use, but not a lot of fun!

Barbeque Pits or Dry Smokers

Professional barbecuers tend to favor a more traditional approach using a barbeque pit-style smoker, and dry heat as a source to smoke. These types of smokers often feature an offset firebox on one side of the grill and a cooking chamber on the other. Dry smokers do not require charcoal or gas. Instead, they use split logs which serve as their dry heat source. The down side to using wood means that you must constantly maintain the fire to keep the smoker at its target temperature.

Many barbecuers feel that a dry heat source provides a more intense, smoky flavor. Since the meats are further away from the heat source, the cooking process is slower and longer. Slower cooking translates into more intense flavor.

Considerations to Keep in Mind

For many, the first consideration when selecting a smoker is going to be price. With a wide selection and variety of smokers from which to choose, everyone from beginners to experts should be able to find something within their price range. The general rule of thumb for many when purchasing a smoker is to buy the best smoker you can afford and justify. It may help to purchase that higher-end smoker if you look at it as a long-term investment. Many smokers are built to last for years. And that translates into years of smoking enjoyment and tasty meals.

After considering price, you should also think about:

Fuel

As mentioned, smokers are designed to use a variety of fuel sources. How readily available the fuel source is and how potentially expensive it may become can be a major factor in selecting a smoker. Remember, depending on what you are smoking, you are going to have to use a fuel source, aside from electric models, which will require re-supplying for anywhere up to eight hours each time.

Also, if you can't see yourself diligently tending a charcoal or wood fire for long periods of time, you may prefer a gas or electric smoker. However, the flavor from a gas or electric smoker may not be as intense or flavorful as with authentic wood or charcoal.

Capacity

How many people do you intend to cook for? Will it just be your immediate family and a few friends, or are you a hard-core smoker or professional who will cook for anyone and everyone? Again, it's important to keep in mind how long meats are going to take to cook. If typical cooking times can run upwards of eight hours, you are going to want enough space to smoke everything in one batch.

Portability

Smokers can range from small and portable grills that are easy to carry to large units that mount onto trailers. Charcoal smokers are generally more portable than gas or electric smokers and are lighter in weight, making them much easier to carry.

Air Flow Control

Look for units that have adjustable vents. The ideal temperature for smoking is between 200 and 250 degrees. Smokers that have a good venting system will allow for better control of the air flow and temperature to maintain that heat.

Price Range

Smokers are available in a wide range of styles. Prices can range from $50 to $5000 depending on the size, type and quality selected. In the case of smokers, many agree that spending a little extra will definitely get you better quality, more features and longer life. Super-low priced smokers tend to be low quality, lightweight and flimsy. This in turn will lead you to higher fuel costs and more difficult maintenance needed to keep a consistent smoking temperature. So, for a little extra investment, you can get a better unit that will last you longer.

Charcoal water smokers are considered one of the best values for beginning smokers. Many units start out at under $50. If you are leaning toward a gas or electric unit, you can find a solid smoker for under $100. If you are set on a wood-fired pit smoker, expect to see prices that range from $200 to $600. A good quality wood-fired pit smoker will probably set you back about $500. However, many of these units are designed to provide you many years of smoking bliss.
Blog:5a261008-389a-47c7-8282-e548177a3e6aPost:69e1b39a-3b7c-431d-9ce9-585ccfdcf155 Is An Outdoor Pool Right For You? http://www.homeclick.com/community/buying-guides-garden-patio-buying-guides.aspx/_outdoor-pool-right Sun, 21 Aug 2011 20:48:00 GMT
Is An Outdoor Pool Right For You?

Shape, size and depth are your choice.

An outdoor pool can be a convenient oasis where you can relax, exercise and entertain. If you’re contemplating buying a pool, you’ll first want to consider your reasons for wanting a pool. Is this a passing fancy or have you given it significant though? How frequently will you use it? If your mind is made up, you’ll need to look at expenses and how much you can afford.

Reasons and Use

People purchase pools for various reasons. Because of the expense involved, you’ll want to make sure that you’re going to use it and get your money’s worth. You may want to use the pool to:

• Spend time with your family
• Entertain friends
• Exercise and/or for therapy
• Relax
• Add an aesthetic accent to your home

If you can envision utilizing a pool in this manner, you’ll then want to give a realistic estimate of how often you and your family will use the pool. Some factors include:

• Location—pools in Southern California will see more frequent use than those in New England.
• Family—if the kids are older, they won’t be around much to use it.
• Career—are you too busy to spend time in your pool?
• Travel—are you away a lot and unlikely to use the pool very much?

If you can honestly say that you’ll put a pool to use, the next step is determining what type of pool meets your needs and budget.

Types of Pools

There are two major types of outdoor pools—above-ground and in-ground. Above-ground pools are less expensive and less impressive looking. Still, if your point is to cool down and have some fun, they certainly serve their function. Above-ground models range in price from $2,000 to $10,000.

In-ground pools are more expensive to install and average between $15,000 and $25,000. There are various types of pools, including lap-lane pools, which are used for cardiovascular exercise, non-diving pools that are four to five feet deep and beach entry pools that start with the water level at zero and gradually slope to a standard diving level. This last type of pool is not as commonly seen in a residential setting since it takes extra space to accommodate the gradually deepening water. It is important to note that lap-lane pools and those that are four or five feet deep are also available in above-ground models.

Finally, there is the basic in-ground swimming pool that starts at a depth of around three feet and gradually goes to anywhere from seven to ten feet. This type of built-in swimming pool, which is perfect for waterslides, diving and swimming, is the most common home pool. It offers versatility in that it can accommodate everyone from children to adults and it provides for a variety of activities, including swimming laps, water play and just plain relaxing on inflated water mattresses. Depending on the type of material used to make it, it may also take on various configurations and depths may vary considerably.

Pool Materials

An in-ground pool usually has a lifespan of up to 30 years. Pools tend to be made out of fiberglass, steel, concrete or gunite. Gunite is a dry mixture of concrete and aggregate that is sprayed with water over a steel frame. Steel wall pools include a vinyl liner that needs to be replaced after 10 to 15 years. Steel tends to be less expensive than cement or gunite. U nlike fiberglass, gunite and concrete, steel will not crack or chip due to freezing temperatures.

Of the four, fiberglass is the least expensive in-ground solution. These are prefabricated and shipped as a unit. They install in a day or two. Installation for a steel walled pool takes three to five days while a concrete or gunite pool usually takes two to three weeks to install. Both fiberglass and steel walled- vinyl lined pools are easier to clean than concrete. Gunite is flexible enough in that it offers many different finishes, including fiberglass and tile, both of which are easy to maintain and concrete and aggregate that are more difficult to keep clean.

Concrete and gunite do give the pool owner more options in terms of shape and built-in features. Thus, if you’re looking for a totally customized look, then either of these is the way to go. This is especially true if you are not concerned about price.

Add a deck and ladder for easy access to your above-ground pool.
Photo courtesy of Susan Law Cain.

Above-ground pools tend to last from five to 30 years, with a typical lifespan being around 15. How long an above-ground pool lasts will depend on the materials used and how well they are maintained. Some models are inflatable and others need to be constructed as they utilize metal supports, various types of hardware and vinyl liners.

Shapes of above ground models are limited to round, oval and rectangular. They do come in just about every size and many allow for the addition of a deck. Pools range in price from $2,000 to $7,000 with attached decks starting at $8,000 and going up to $10,000. A basic above ground pool can take as little as a few hours to set up.

Costs

Buying a pool isn’t as simple as slapping cash on the counter and backing the truck up. There are additional costs that need to be factored in, including additional up-front costs for must-have accessories, operational costs and maintenance costs. Here’s a summary of possible costs related to a pool:

• Purchase price
• Installation
• Additional features such as a deck, furniture, etc.
• Insurance
• Added electrical expense to the run filter, night lighting, etc.
• Pool alarm
• Fencing
• Maintenance costs and supplies
• Pool water

All of these costs will vary depending on what kind of pool you purchase. As a general rule, the more customized the solution, the more expensive the pool.

What’s Right for You?

Budget, the amount of land you have and how much you’re going to use your pool will go a long way in influencing what type and size pool you decide to purchase. In-ground models add more value to your home and can be aesthetically pleasing, while less expensive above-ground pools can still be a major relief on a hot and humid summer day. This is no small investment, however. Be sure to assess expected usage and take into account the budget burden of the pool over its lifespan.
Blog:5a261008-389a-47c7-8282-e548177a3e6aPost:476f7a91-fcca-4cc4-a160-bd40c4e53887 Grills Buying Guides http://www.homeclick.com/community/buying-guides-garden-patio-buying-guides.aspx/_grills-buying-guides Sun, 21 Aug 2011 15:37:00 GMT
Grills Buying Guides

Some people run their grill just like an outdoor kitchen handling all of the sides, main dishes and snacks all from one location. Since there are no ashes, you only need to use a good wire grill brush to clean the racks.

Outdoor Grill Options

Side Burners

Mostly found in gas grill tops, side burners work just like a gas stove and turn on easily with a knob. A rack keeps food much higher off the flame and cooks things much more slowly. They are often connected to the grill's lid so that it moves out of the way when you open it. Some mid-level and high-end models include multiple upper level racks to give you space for a variety of foods. Rotisseries can accommodate the slow roasting of meat and poultry.

Look for thick, heavy-duty cast-iron and stainless steel grates, as these will be sturdier and out-perform thin rods.

Outdoor Grill Construction

Grill composition can range from aluminum throw away pans to stainless steel and anything in between. The material your grill is made out of will dramatically affect the price. Most high-end units are made from stainless steel.

Outdoor Grill Sizes

Grill size is firstly the most important characteristic to consider. How many people do you typically grill for? What types of foods do you intend to prepare on the grill? How much space can you dedicate to grilling? Do you want to travel with your grill? An outdoor patio, deck, or poolside space, when well decorated, can serve as a second living area for the family, and can be an excellent place to entertaining your guests.

Outdoor furniture is usually the first consideration when deciding how to decorate the outdoor areas of a home. Outdoor furniture comes in all sorts of sizes and shapes, and can be made of many different materials. With so many options to select from, choosing the best outdoor furniture for a specific area can be a little bit overwhelming. The first thing that should be decided upon is what type of material you would like to buy. That will depend on the amount of sunlight and weather/rain the furniture will be exposed to on a regular basis, and also whether the furniture needs to be lightweight enough to be moved easily. With these considerations in mind, the buyer should then proceed to choose the materials that best fit their outdoor space.

Outdoor Furniture Styles

Wood Outdoor Furniture

Wood patio furniture can be rather heavy, and has an elegant look. Because it is so heavy, wood furniture is often best for places where it is not going to be moved a whole lot. Many buyers prefer wood furniture because of its natural look, and how easy it is to clean. However, there is an amount of routine maintenance, such as oiling, that wood furniture requires. Depending on the type of wood that the furniture is made from, this can be a disadvantage for buyers who are not willing to spend the time and money that is necessary to maintain the wood. Wood furniture does not absorb heat, and always remains cool to the touch. This is one of the reasons it is such a popular choice.

Teak is one of the most popular wood types used in building furniture for outdoors, and also one of the most expensive. It is a dense and very durable wood. It does not easily decay, and can last for decades. This, along with the depletion of supplies of teak wood over the years, is the cause of its high price tag.

Balau is another popular tropical wood used to make patio furniture, and it is more affordable than teak, due to the larger natural supply available. It is a dense wood and is also easy to maintain. Like teak, balau has an elegant look and will last for a very long time.

Eucalyptus is a similarly hard wood with an attractive color. It resists weather extremes very well due to the high content of oil found in eucalyptus. It is less costly than teak, but more expensive than balau. With the oils naturally found in the wood, it requires less regular maintenance than most other types of wood furniture.

Other woods used for outdoor furniture include cedar, oak, pine, ash, and also a variety of recycled woods. In general, these sorts of wood are not as heavy or durable as teak, balau, or eucalyptus. However, furniture made with pine, oak, cedar, or ash will still be heavier than aluminum.

Aluminum Outdoor Furniture

Aluminum is a popular metal used in patio furniture. It does not rust, so it is good for making furniture long-lasting and able to withstand the rain. Aluminum furniture is easy to maintain, and is usually quite affordable. The main disadvantage of aluminum is that it gets hot when in the sun, sometimes making it uncomfortable to sit on. Finding suitable cushions that keep you away from the frame's heat is usually key for aluminum furniture, and it is important to find appropriate cushions that do well in outdoor weather conditions.

Tubular aluminum is made of hollow tubes that are bent into the desired shape. It is usually covered with cushions, and is one of the least expensive types of outdoor furniture. The buyer should make sure that all fixtures are aluminum, and that the furniture is bolted together rather than welded, in order to ensure that it will not rust.

Wrought and cast aluminum furniture are heavier and more expensive than tubular designs of aluminum furniture. Wrought aluminum is forged into the desired design, and is usually a nice blend of elegance and simplicity. Cast aluminum is similar to wrought aluminum, but the designs are much more detailed. Cast aluminum is the most expensive type of aluminum furniture, and it is durable, heavy, and will not rust. It is put together using hand-carved molds, and the designs are often very detailed and elegant, making cast aluminum a very popular style of patio furniture.

Good quality aluminum furniture is finished with a powder coating. This makes the metal look elegant, and also helps in its wet weather resistance.

Wicker Outdoor Furniture

Wicker is a popularly used in the construction of outdoor furniture. Wicker furniture is generally strong and lightweight, and can be moved easily from one place to another. It can range from very affordable prices to rather expensive pieces. It also comes in a wide range of colors and styles. If the furniture is the all-weather variety of wicker, it can withstand wet conditions very well. All-weather varieties are made of synthetic materials. All-weather wicker is durable, strong, and easy to clean.

Rattan is the natural product that is most often used in the making of wicker furniture, being made from its sturdy vine. It is fairly durable, but exposure to direct sunlight or moisture can often damage rattan furniture. Rattan works best when used in screened or covered outdoor spaces. If it is left fully exposed to the weather, it should be regularly treated. It is important for the buyer to make sure that there are no jagged edges on the rattan, which can cause snagged clothing or splinters.

Wrought Iron Outdoor Furniture

Heavy, strong, and elegant designs of patio furniture can be made from wrought iron. The main disadvantage of wrought iron is that it can rust. Powder coatings and other rust retardants can be used on the surface to avoid this problem, and can also create a pleasing visual effect. You should look closely at the coatings used for wrought iron furniture before purchasing, to make sure that the furniture will not get rusty.

Plastic or PVC Outdoor Furniture

Plastic or PVC furniture is lightweight, and is very good for wet conditions. It is often preferred for outdoor areas that are close to water, such as at pool sides. Plastic and PVC outdoor furniture is very affordable and offers a large variety of colors.

Outdoor Furniture Features to Consider

The Weight of the Furniture

It is important, when buying outdoor furniture, to consider its weight. If the furniture needs to be moved from place to place, lighter furniture is obviously desirable. Wicker, plastic and aluminum furniture types are usually the lightest and the easiest to move. On the other hand, if the outdoor furniture is going to be placed in a windy location, then the outdoor furniture needs to be heavy enough so that it can't be moved by the wind. Wrought iron and wood are the heaviest types of patio furniture, with wrought or cast aluminum also being heavy enough to withstand most windy conditions. These things should be kept in mind when choosing the furniture for your home's outdoor space.

The Need for Additional Accessories

Some outdoor furniture requires cushions to be comfortable enough for prolonged use. If you plan to buy furniture that does not come with cushions, the cost of the additional accessories should be factored into the overall price when choosing between one style of furniture and another. Cushions and other accessories can often add up to be more expensive than some buyers would first anticipate.
Blog:5a261008-389a-47c7-8282-e548177a3e6aPost:6bd92400-1e9f-410a-8ff5-3218189d9bc0 Hammocks Buying Guide http://www.homeclick.com/community/buying-guides-garden-patio-buying-guides.aspx/_hammocks-buying-guide Fri, 05 Aug 2011 14:43:00 GMT
Hammocks Buying Guide

A hammock can bring you visions of swaying in the breeze on a secluded tropical beach, relaxing deep in the forest after a satisfying day of hiking, or just looking up at the falling leaves on a crisp autumn day while drifting off to a wonderful nap. There are water-resistant and quick-drying hammocks primarily designed for beach, pool and lakeside use. Camping and travel hammocks are lightweight, portable, and easy to mount or set up. Luxurious and comfortable quilted hammocks are available in stylish colors and patterns. There are also upright swing styles that can also be an interesting choice.

Craftsmanship varies according to the type of hammock. Across the board, handmade work indicates the highest quality. In rope hammocks, material quality depends largely on rope thickness and weaving. The best spreader (also called stretcher) bars are made of solid wood treated for weather-resistance. Metal hardware should always be rust-resistant. Fabric materials should be durable, weather-resistant, and colorfast. All hammocks should be well-balanced for even and smooth rocking.

Keep in mind that you often will have to separately buy mounting hardware, tree straps, or hammock stands. Often the only pieces of hardware included with a hammock are the ones that connect to whatever will be used to hang it.

Some hammocks are designed for single person use, while others can support more than one person comfortably and safely. There are different width options available, with a length of 13 feet generally being standard. In general, only hammocks with spreader bars will work for more than one person. Care should always be used with hammocks and young children, who should never be left unattended using one. Not all hammocks are appropriate for use by small children.

There are also some hammock accessories that are handy and nice to have. Because of their durability, polyester hammocks are a popular choice.

DuraCord

This material is as soft as cotton and as weather-resistant as polyester, making it a highly desirable choice. Usually available in the same material and style options as conventional hammocks, you'll find a wide variety of chair swings, from rope woven to padded cloth. They are usually designed for single use but double swings are also available.

Craftsmanship

As a general rule, handmade construction provides the best quality and longevity.

Creating the best rope hammocks requires a great deal of skilled labor. To create thickness, miles of yarn are molded into layers, which are then joined to create three-ply rope. The rope is continuously woven to form the hammock. 8mm rope is highest quality, with 4 to 6mm very common. Top material options include DuraCord and polyester for their durability, and cotton, for its traditional look and feel. DuraCord rope, given its soft feel and durability, is widely considered the best choice for comfort and strength combined.

When evaluating stretcher bars, solid hardwood is the highest quality option. They should always be treated for weather-resistance. Good stretcher bars will spread rope evenly for both stability and balance to help provide a comfortable, gentle, and even rocking motion.

The best fabrics should be strong, weather-resistant, and colorfast, in addition to feeling comfortable.

Metal hardware should be secure, heavy duty, and rust-resistant.

Hammock Hanging: Stands and More

Hammock stands are a popular way to hang hammocks and hammock swings. Once you've chosen your hammock, it should be fairly simple to find a matching stand. They are generally available in standard sizes, along with some models that are adjustable. High quality stands are available in heavy duty metal, such as steel, and hardwoods. Look for strength, durability, and rust-resistance in a stand. Also, check to see how much weight it can support and what length hammock it can accommodate. Most support 450 pounds, with some going as high as 600, and are designed for 13 foot long hammocks.

For hanging between trees, tree straps are often a better choice than hardware which requires drilling holes in them. Hammocks stretch a bit over time and may need to be readjusted. Multiple holes aren't pleasing to look at, though they shouldn't really harm the trees. In general, the ideal distance for hanging between trees is about two feet longer than the full hammock length, so for a standard 13 foot hammock, it should be about 15 feet. Hanging height should be about four to five feet off the ground.

Hammock Size and Weight Allowances

13 feet long is standard for hammocks, with a typical bed length of 82 inches. Width varies from about 55 to 65 inches, depending on whether it is designed for one of more people. It is best to go with the standard length, since this will make it easy to match the hammock with a standard stand.

Most hammocks and stands can support 450lbs, with some going up to 600lbs. You should always check the specifications for both your hammock and stand.

Price Range

Hammock prices differ based on style, size, craftsmanship, and material. Make sure you know exactly what your hammock comes with. Often you will have to purchase a hammock stand, tree straps, or hanging hardware separately. Typically, you can find a high quality hammock in most styles, sizes, and materials within the $100 to $250 price range. There are also many choices available priced between $50 to $150.

The price of a hammock stands also depends on the quality and style. They generally fall from $125 to almost $200 for well-constructed metal ones, but more elaborate stand options can cost considerably more. Tree straps should only cost you about $20 to $30.
Blog:5a261008-389a-47c7-8282-e548177a3e6aPost:b073fc55-c1c1-40a3-93bc-9ffd860f017d Outdoor Fountains Buying Guide http://www.homeclick.com/community/buying-guides-garden-patio-buying-guides.aspx/_outdoor-fountains-buying-guide Wed, 03 Aug 2011 15:24:00 GMT
Outdoor Fountains Buying Guide

Outdoor fountains have recently become a more popular addition to yards and gardens. This is probably due in part to their captivating sights and soothing water sounds. While years ago only the most luxurious of homes could afford an outdoor fountain, that no longer holds water. In fact, outdoor fountains come in such a diverse range of prices and sizes, everyone can find the right piece for their yard or garden with their budget.

Considerations When Selecting an Outdoor Fountain

Choosing an outdoor fountain can be overwhelming if you think about the vast number of options you have. While your budget will have a large influence on your final decision, you need to also consider the following things in your quest for the perfect outdoor fountain.

Features

What type of features are you looking for in terms of sight and sound? Would you like the water in your fountain to spray, bubble, trickle, or cascade? Another consideration is the sound that the water makes. Larger fountains are going to make more noise. Do you want to hear the roar of the water or the soft babbling of a brook coming from your garden? If you decide you'd like to go big, be sure you have a spacious enough area for your fountain to live so that the sound can be dispersed.

Size of Yard and/or Pond

How large is the space where you would like to put the fountain? Smaller yards and/or ponds can be overpowered easily by a large piece. Likewise, expansive lawns can swallow up a small, delicate piece. You want your fountain to be a focal point for your yard, so choose a piece that will work well with its surroundings.

Materials

Fountains are made out of a variety of materials. Each having advantages and disadvantages. When choosing the material for your fountain, keep in mind the weather where you live. Some materials are not very weather resistant, and do not stand up well to cold weather changes.

Fountain materials include concrete, terracotta, millstone, carved or cast stone, lightweight glass fiber or faux stone, lead marble, marble, bronze, brass, and aluminum. Bronze and brass can last a very long time and if left in weather, can often develop a stunning aged surface finish that many people love. Aluminum is lighter than bronze, but doesn't age as well when exposed to harsh weather. Marble is often valued for its artistic sculpting uniqueness, but can crack in a winter freeze-thaw event. Lead metal has a traditional antique quality and often becomes darker as it ages. However, as it is a soft metal, it sometimes needs to be reshaped with a soft mallet hammer. Cast stone is a type of concrete that is durable and has a natural stone appearance. It comes in a range of colors and, if crafted properly, can last more than 10 winters.

Safety & Maintenance

Safety and maintenance are also important considerations. In terms of safety, ask yourself if small children or animals will come in contact with the fountain? Is it anchored safely to the ground? Can it easily tip over? Is there a potential drowning hazard?

Depending on the material of the fountain, you may need to devote a little more time to upkeep and maintenance to keep it in prime condition. Concrete and cast stone fountains need to be kept completely dry if they are left outdoors during winter. Fiberglass fountains also need to be entirely dry or they can crack. If water remains in the plumbing and a pipe bursts, it will quite likely break a fountain as well. Fiberglass fountains are usually light enough that they can easily be moved indoors during the winter months. Lastly, algae can often grow in the water if it is not properly treated or kept clean. Check with the manufacturer's guidelines to find out how much ongoing maintenance you will need to perform.

Styles of Outdoor Fountains

Outdoor fountains come in a wide variety of styles, shapes and sizes. A deck can provide a place to relax, entertain friends and enjoy the home’s landscape. It also increases the value of the home. Whether the design is simple or intricate, material selection will play a part in homeowner satisfaction with the new deck. From traditional and conventionally treated woods to composite materials designed to last a lifetime, choosing materials for a deck can be overwhelming This article will clearly identify all available choices, provide pricing information and weigh out some of the pros and cons of the different deck material options available today.

Selections

Here are five of the most popular deck material options, listed in no particular order:

Pressure-treated

Redwood and Cedar

Tropical Hardwoods

Composite

Aluminum

Pressure-treated. Pressure-treated lumber remains the number one choice of materials for all deck construction. O ver 75% of new decks built use pressure-treated lumber. Cost most certainly plays a role in this statistic, as pressure-treated lumber sells for around $.90 per linear foot for 2x6’s and 5/4 inch planks at $1.00 per linear foot for finishing planks. Routine maintenance is required with pressure-treated decks depending on location. This can include periodic power washing and application of preservative coating (sealing or staining). Life expectancy of pressure-treated pine decking is 25-30 years under normal conditions.

Redwood and Cedar. Redwood and cedar decking material are known for their durability and beauty in all weather conditions. According to award-winning builder Scott Padgett, Idyllwild, Calif, “composite or other decking has no soul.” The California Redwood Association recommends using common redwood for a decking solution that brings a natural beauty enduring all weather conditions. Priced competitively, redwood and cedar are typically more expensive than pressure-treated materials with costs ranging from $2.35-$4.00 per linear foot, depending on location. These two naturally durable and insect-resistant deck material options require much less maintenance than pressure-treated wood, although both can stand for regular washing to keep the surface looking clean and new.

Tropical Hardwoods. Tropical hardwoods are the most expensive of all natural wood decking material with costs starting at $3.50 per linear foot for a 1x6. Available in Massaranduba, camar, red tauari, tigerwood, ipe, as well as Philippine mahogany, tropical hardwoods used in deck construction often require special ordering which may inflate the cost per linear foot even higher . The rich grain texture of tropical hardwoods are extremely hard and resistant to rot and insects.
[Decking material-8.jpg: ]

Composite decking material is available in an assortment of colors.

Composite. Composite decking, often referred to a “plastic lumber,” is the fastest growing decking material sold to date. P riced at around $2.50-$3.50 per linear foot ( depending on manufacturer ) composite decking material offers unique advantages including “low maintenance required” and resistance to color fading and decay. They are also resistant to insects and rot. Composite decking materials come in an extensive list of color and wood grain options, allowing homeowners to match the material to almost any configuration.

Aluminum. Aluminum decking material is often used in more contemporary or modern homes, as the metallic visual appearance of aluminum best matches that modern look of the home. Aluminum is a about a third the weight of wood or composite and up to 4-5 times stronger. It is also 100% recyclable. It can also be expensive, w ith costs starting at $9.00 per linear foot.

Construction Costs

Pressure treated pine decking with applied water repellant.

The biggest determining factor in the construction cost of a new deck is whether or not it is a DIY project or a job-for-hire.
